Highlighted by the launch of ESPN Deportes’ Pan Am digital destination, special programming and in-depth reports around the athletes’ journey and the Games; live onsite coverage leading up to the Games
April 1 marks 100 days until the kick-off of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. As the official and exclusive presenter in the U.S., ESPN and ESPN Deportes celebrate the countdown with comprehensive multiplatform content, highlighted by the debut of special programming and the launch of a complete digital destination, hosting all the action around the “road to Toronto 2015” and beyond.
ESPN Deportes’ Andres Agulla will inaugurate the network’s coverage today at 12:00 p.m. E.T. reporting live from the host city Toronto, from the Athletes Village throughout the day. Starting with #Redes, Agulla will continue the 100-days-out-special on Los Capitanes, Nación ESPN, and SportsCenter, featuring athletes, country representative and local dignitaries.
As part of the celebration, the network will debut the following programming and segments leading up to the Opening Ceremony of Toronto 2015:
- Pan American Athletes Profiles: Over 30 special short-interview series profiling some of the most prominent athletes competing at the 2015 Pan Am Games will air on SportsCenter starting April 1 through July 9, across ESPN and ESPN Deportes. The two-minute pieces will focus on participating athletes from Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Some of the athletes being featured include two-time Olympic gold medalist and Pan Am gold medalist Felix Sánchez (400 hurdles, Dominican Republic); Olympic silver medalist and Pan Am 2011 gold medalist Aida Román (archery, Mexico); Olympic silver medalist Luguelin Santos (400 meters, Dominican Republic); Olympic bronze medalist Javier Culson (400m hurdles, Puerto Rico); three-time Pan Am gold medalist and reigning racquetball world champion Paola Longoria (Mexico); three-time gold medalist 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games Omar Pinzón (swimming, Colombia); 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games gold medalist Monica Puig (WTA#48-Puerto Rico); among many others.
- Legends of the Pan American Games: A total of 15 90-second capsules airing across all platforms will highlight some of the most legendary athletes that have participated in the Games, including Michael Jordan, Mark Spitz, Felix Sanchez and Javier Sotomayor.
- 15 Guests in 15 Weeks: For the next 15 weeks, ESPN Deportes will also feature a guest athlete every week on #Redes, Los Capitanes, Nacion or SportsCenter. The first special guest representing Mexico in Squash, Samantha Teran, will appear live on Los Capitanes at 3:00 p.m. E.T.
- Sonidos de Toronto (Toronto Sights and Sounds): Ten vignettes showcasing the beauty of Toronto, with a focus on the city’s music and character.
- Zona Pan-Americana: ESPN Deportes Radio joins the 100-day countdown celebration with a special edition of Zona ESPN. Wednesday’s two-hour show will preview the Zona Pan-Americana takeover during the Games in July.
The section on ESPN Deportes exclusively dedicated to the Games will serve as the Spanish-language online hub for the latest news including interviews and reports, and live updates featuring highlights, original videos, photo galleries, social feeds, stats and more. Social media fans can follow the conversation around the 2015 Pan Am Games and interact using hashtag #PanamXESPN and #YoDigoPresente.
The Pan American Games Toronto 2015 will take place July 10-26, featuring 36 Summer Olympic sports, such as soccer, boxing, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, cycling, judo, etc. More than 7,000 athletes, representing 41 nations from the Americas, are expected to compete in Toronto. This is the third time that Canada hosts the event, and the first held in the providence of Ontario.
ESPN Deportes, ESPN and ESPN2 will provide exclusive, multimedia coverage of the XVII Pan American Games Toronto 2015 in English and Spanish. ESPN and ESPN 2 will dedicate more than 80 hours of live coverage while ESPN Deportes will present more than 200 hours of Olympic-type coverage around the event.
ESPN has been the U.S. home of the Pan American Games since 2007; the event is held every four years, and serves as a platform for many athletes looking to participate in the Olympic Games. In 2011, ESPN Deportes’ 125 hours of live coverage of the Pan American Game from Guadalajara delivered the highest ratings across all Spanish-language cable networks through the 17 days of the tournament. The ESPN Deportes telecasts, in addition to ESPN2’s coverage of select events, reached 19 million viewers.
