Women’s College Basketball: Stanford Head Coach Tara VanDerveer Chases Career Milestone

Stanford Head Coach Tara VanDerveer is one win away from reaching a career milestone—her 1,000th win. No. 8 Stanford faces USC on Friday, followed by a Big Monday matchup against No. 13 UCLA on Feb. 6 (9 p.m., ESPN2). Beth Mowins, Kara Lawson and Shelley Smith will call the action from Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. This matchup follows the first Big Monday game of the night, featuring No. 9 Louisville facing No. 7 Notre Dame.

This week’s slate features several other ranked teams, including No. 3 Maryland, No. 4 South Carolina, No. 5 Mississippi State, No. 6 Florida State, No. 8 Stanford, No. 12 Texas, No. 13 UCLA, No. 19 NC State, No. 21 Green Bay, No. 24 Syracuse and No. 25 Kentucky.

espnW

espnW named Washington’s Kelsey Plum the national player of the week after scoring 44 points against Stanford on Sunday. Plum has the third best shooting percentage in the nation, and is averaging 31.3 points per game. Plum is the Pac-12 all-time scoring leader, and could potentially break the NCAA all-time scoring record this season.

This week’s content includes:

  • Bracketology with Charlie Creme
  • Tennessee’s Jaime Nared: The Tennessee junior and older sister Jackie are so competitive they don’t even try to play one-on-one anymore. Luckily, competition on the court is all that ever divides them (Graham Hays)
  • Drake coach Jennie Baranczyk was sued in December, accused of forcing assistant coach Courtney Graham to quit because she was gay. The Iowa Civil Rights Commission dismissed an earlier complaint from Graham. Baranczyk speaks about her philosophy and commitment to diversity after being unfairly and falsely accused (Mechelle Voepel)
  • Mid-major rankings (Graham Hays)
  • As Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer nears her 1,000th career coaching victory — something only one other women’s college coach has achieved (Pat Summitt) — we look at VanDerveer’s career, everything she has done to elevate the sport, the young coaches she has mentored — and commitment to a process that has produced everything from NCAA titles to Olympic gold to national players of the year to some of the best players in the WNBA. And of course, VanDerveer is nonplussed by all of it. (Michelle Smith)
  • The 10 biggest wins of VanDerveer’s career (Michelle Smith)
  • NC State’s reemergence: The Wolfpack are having one of their best seasons in recent memory, moving to No. 18 in the rankings with some stellar wins on their resume already. Up next? Louisville on Thursday night. (Mechelle Voepel)
