ESPN’s star-studded US Open women’s semifinal doubleheader in prime time Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. ET includes the top two players in the world – either of whom could leave New York atop the rankings – plus a two-time US Open finalist who also twice was No. 1 in the world, and the No. 10 seed making her first appearance this deep in a Major event:
- Top-seeded Serena Williams continues her quest for a 23rd Major title and seventh in New York (both would be Open Era records) vs. No. 10 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. The 6’1”, 24-year old has never before reached the semifinal round of a Major tournament.
- Angelique Kerber, the No. 2 player in the world who has appeared in two Major finals already this year (defeated Serena Williams in Australia, lost to Williams at Wimbledon), against Caroline Wozniacki, the two-time US Open finalist (2009, 2014) and former top-ranked player in the world now ranked 74 thanks to chronic injuries.
In Friday’s men’s semifinals, defending champion and top-seeded Novak Djokovic plays No. 10 Gael Monfils who turned 30 last week and is enjoying his best season. Also, No. 6 Kei Nishikori – who lost in the finals of the 2014 US Open – will play the winner of Wednesday night’s match between No. 3 Stan Wawrinka and 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro.
Also Friday, the Mixed Doubles Championship – where Americans Coco Vandeweghe and Rajeev Ram play Laura Siegemund of Germany and Mate Pavic of Croatia – will be at noon on ESPN2. The men’s doubles and women’s doubles championships will be seen at noon on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, on WatchESPN.
