Enhanced functionality allows users to go back as far as 1995 to chronicle every game ever viewed or attended

Just in time for the 2011 baseball season, ESPN today launched its newly enhanced ESPN Passport app, free to download and now available in the App Store.  With the new app, fans will not only be able to commemorate their at-the-game experiences, but can now “check-in” wherever they’re watching the game too – on the couch, at a friend’s place, out on the town or anywhere else in the world.

“The ESPN Passport app utilizes geo-location based technology to connect sports fans like never before,” said Marc Horine, vice president, digital partnerships and revenue development, ESPN.  “Millions will now have the ability to capture, chronicle and share their complete sports history on mobile devices and through ESPN.com.”

The new app allows users to add games as far back as 1995 for the 4 major sports (NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL) and sporting events from leagues and tournaments like NASCAR, tennis, golf and even European soccer.  Check-in’s and pictures taken at each location can be archived to their ESPN Passport page on ESPN.com, published live to social media pages like Facebook and Twitter and shout-out’s can be made to their favorite teams.  Additionally, users can comment on games in real time, the app will keep a record of games attended or viewed, where they sat and users will have the ability to upload mobile photos to share with friends via social media platforms.

In time, the ESPN Passport app will be available to Android devices and accessible via the ESPN ScoreCenter app.  It will also be able to utilize a fan’s geo-location to select a Facebook Place tied to their check-in.  Not only will fans be able to check into a place where they’re catching the game, but they will soon be able to look up a place nearby that’s known to host other fans of the same team affiliation.  In addition, challenges will also be introduced for fans to earn rewards and badges in the near future.
