This year’s Black History programming on ESPN will include a comprehensive look at the Black athlete through the multi-dimensional initiative, “The Color of Sports.” ESPN will take viewers “behind the curtain” to look at those athletes and events that made the Black athlete part of the fabric in today’s sports. Daily vignettes, two new documentaries, content on ESPN.com and more than 25 hours of programming on ESPN Classic highlight the network’s annual month-long commitment.
“What Matters” Vignettes
Sports-related vignettes featuring future sports athletes from high school and college will air throughout the day on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS. All 12 30-second spots, sponsored by the U.S. Marines, focus on Black athletes in pursuit of achieving their dreams and overcoming obstacles.
The Color Orange: The Condredge Holloway Story
As part of ESPN’s Year of the Quarterback programming, the network will televise the story of Condredge Holloway, the first black quarterback at an SEC school (University of Tennessee) who didn’t get a shot in the NFL although he went on to be an all-star player in the Canadian Football League. Country singer Kenny Chesney, a noted football fan, produced the one-hour documentary that takes a personal look at his boyhood idol, Holloway, on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Wendell Scott: A Race Story
“”Mr. Scott is my inspiration,” said ESPN NASCAR analyst Brad Daugherty. “If not for him, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today in racing. He paved the way for me through his trials and tribulations, and for that I’m forever grateful.”
ESPN Classic Programming Starts February 7
ESPN Classic will provide retrospectives, films and conversations that reflect some of the greatest Black athletes in the history of sports, including Florence Griffith- Joyner, Ernie Davis, Jackie Robinson and more. Schedule
