The US Open Men’s Championship on ESPN on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. ET will be decided between Novak Djokovic – the top-ranked player in the world seeking his third Major title of a year for the third time – and No. 3 Stan Wawrinka who is 2-0 in Major finals (Australian Open 2014 vs. Rafael Nadal, French Open 2015 vs. Djokovic). Chris Fowler will call the match with John and Patrick McEnroe while Darren Cahill will contribute from courtside. Coverage begins at 3:30 p.m. with 2016 US Open Men’s Championship Preview Show hosted by Chris McKendry.
- Top seeded Novak Djokovic has two US Opens among the dozen Major trophies on his mantle. The 29-year old from Serbia is 2-4 in US Open finals 12-8 in Major finals overall. He is seeking a rare accomplishment, winning three Major titles in a calendar year. He previously accomplished the feat in 2011 and a year ago, the years he won the US Open. He holds a 19-4 head-to-head advantage over Wawrinka.
- 3 seed Stan Wawrinka, 31, long stood in the shadow of fellow Swiss, Roger Federer. That was before 2014. In the two-plus seasons since, he has captured 10 of his 14 career titles, including becoming the oldest first-time Major champion among men in 13 years. Should he win Sunday, he will become only the fifth man in the Open era and the first since Andre Agassi to win more than one major title after his 30th birthday.
(Very) Different Paths to the Final
- Wawrinka has spent nearly twice as long on court as Djokovic has so far: a little under 18 hours vs. a little under nine hours. That’s because Djokovic enjoyed the easiest path to a major semifinal in the nearly half-century of the Open era: Through his first six matches, two of Djokovic’s opponents had to retire with injury, and a third withdrew before a ball was struck.
- In this tournament alone, Wawrinka has played a staggering 23 sets and 237 games. Djokovic, meanwhile, has played only 13 sets and a total of 118 games, putting him on a record pace for fewest sets and games in an Open era major that featured a 128-man draw and best-of-five-set matches.
