Monday Night Football Helps ESPN Win the Night among All Networks

Total Live Audience: 12 Million Average Viewers for Season-Opening MNF Doubleheader
ESPN Records its Two Largest Streaming Audiences Ever for MNF

Last night’s 2016 season-opening Monday Night Football doubleheader helped ESPN win the night among all networks – broadcast or cable – in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos. The MNF games ranked as the #1 (Steelers-Redskins) and #2 (Rams-49ers) telecasts among all key male and adult demos.

Last night’s MNF games (6:55 p.m.-1:28 a.m. ET) delivered a total live audience (TV + Streaming) of 12 million average viewers.

  • On TV (ESPN and ESPN Deportes), the games delivered 11.7 million average viewers. On ESPN, the games averaged a 7.0 US household rating.
  • ESPN’s streaming (ESPN and ESPN Deportes) recorded its two largest audiences ever for MNF with 309,000 average viewers per minute for Rams-49ers and 307,000 for Steelers-Redskins.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Washington Redskins
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 38-16 victory over the Washington Redskins delivered a total live audience (TV + Streaming) of 13.3 million average viewers. In Pittsburgh, the game delivered a 14.0 rating on ESPN and a 27.5 on WTAE-ABC, for a combined 41.5 rating in the market. In Washington, the game delivered an 8.7 rating on ESPN and a 16.3 on WJLA-ABC, for a combined 25.0 rating in the market.

The top 10 metered markets (not including those of the competing teams): Norfolk (19.5), Richmond-Petersburg (17.0), Baltimore (14.6), New Orleans (13.6), Raleigh-Durham and West Palm Beach (12.6), Greenville (12.2), Philadelphia (12.1), Charlotte (12.0) and Denver (11.8).

Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers’ 28-0 victory over the Los Angeles Rams delivered a total live audience (TV + Streaming) of 10.6 million average viewers. In Los Angeles, the game delivered an 8.9 rating on ESPN and a 7.2 on KABC-ABC, for a combined 16.1 rating in the market. In San Francisco, the game delivered a 10.2 rating on ESPN and a 13.5 on KGO-ABC, for a combined 23.7 rating in the market.

The top 10 metered markets (not including those of the competing teams): Sacramento (18.4), Portland (13.0), Las Vegas (11.8), New Orleans (10.8), Seattle-Tacoma (10.7), San Diego (10.4), Norfolk (10.2), Denver (9.8), Nashville (8.7), and Richmond-Petersburg (8.1).
