In May of 2013, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant pledged $1million to help local recovery efforts after a devastating EF-5 tornado swept through Moore, Okla. While his generous gesture made national news, it was a photo taken by a local photographer that made global headlines. One year later, the NBA’s MVP helps tell the story of a hug between two survivors, Jim Routon and Hezekiah Darbon, and the lasting image they shared. “For a photographer, there were pictures happening everywhere. There was something amazing and horrible and unbelievable happening in every direction.” — Paul Hellstern, photographer, The Oklahoman
“It looked like a war zone, looked just like Katrina but it was dry. I almost lost hope when I got there, I couldn’t believe how anybody would’ve survived that.” — Joseph Darbon, father of the iconic photo’s Hezekiah Darbon
“The walls had fallen down on us. We could just smell gas and I thought that was how we might go.” — Waynel Mayes, Briarwood Elementary School teacher
Felix Sabates: “Home”
Outside the Lines (Sunday, 9 a.m., ESPN)
SportsCenter (Sunday, 11 p.m., ESPN Deportes)

This weekend’s Sprint All-Star Race is NASCAR’s homecoming, with teams returning to the heart of NASCAR-country — Charlotte, N.C. That is also where Chip Ganassi Racing co-owner Felix Sabates made his home more than 50 years ago after fleeing Cuba when Fidel Castro seized control of the island, vowing never to return while Castro was alive. He had never looked back until ESPN shared with him present-day images of the city he left behind more than a half century ago.
“I made a promise to my mother that as long as Fidel Castro was alive, I would not go to Cuba. He’s alive. If he dies tomorrow, I might go to Cuba the following day, but I’m gonna live up to that promise.” – Felix Sabates, on his decision not to return to Cuba
“They started taking the businesses one by one. One day, they came into the drug store and they said, ‘Okay, this is gonna belong to the government. And if you want to stay here, you can work for the government now.’” — Silvia Sabates-Coltrane, Felix’s sister, on witnessing the Cuban government seizing her family’s businesses
“The pictures of what I see today is nothing of what I remember when I was growing up. It makes you feel like part of your life was taken away from you.” — Sabates, after seeing images of Camaguey, Cuba for the first time in 54 years
