John Barr interviews Steven Elliott

April 22 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of former Arizona Cardinals safety Pat Tillman, who gave up NFL millions to join the Army Rangers following 9/11.

For the first time since the friendly fire killing in Afghanistan that was initially portrayed by the military as something completely different, one of the platoon mates who told investigators he fired upon Tillman, former Army Ranger Steven Elliott, speaks publicly about the fratricide and the emotional toll of a decade of silence. Bryan O’Neal, who was positioned closest to Tillman at the time of the shooting, also shares his perspective on the tragedy. ESPN investigative reporter Mike Fish and Outside the Lines’ John Barr report.

This piece will also be part of a one-hour Outside the Lines Special – Pat Tillman: 10 Years Later an Enduring Tragedy on Tuesday, April 22 at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Carry On
NSSA Honors ‘Carry On’ as 2013 Story of the Year

espn_e_carry_on_b7_300

Carry On, the ESPN Outside the Lines story that followed the lives of two friends, drawn to each other by their obstacles and their common goals, has been named the 2013 Story of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. NSSA will present the 2013 Story of the Year award to ESPN during the 55th Annual NSSA Awards Banquet on Monday night, June 9th, at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC.
Producer Lisa Fenn told ESPNFrontRow:

“This story was completely different than any other I have ever produced. I’ve done stories about individuals, about moments, about events, but I had never done a story about a friendship, and what I came to learn is that in order for a friendship to appear natural on camera, I kind of had to become a part of it so that I could just be part of the ebb and flow. It’s impossible to say ‘OK, now be friends on three, roll cameras!”
