Tom Rinaldi interviewing Boston Marathon bombing hero Robert Wheeler

A year ago on April 15, one of the country’s most iconic sports events ended in horrific fashion: the Boston Marathon finish line became the scene of tragedy when two bomb blasts claimed three lives, injured more than 260 people, and shook a city to its core. In its aftermath, as people struggled to make sense of the deadly attacks, Boston’s sports teams rallied to help heal the city and, as Tom Rinaldi reports, show the world the meaning of “Boston Strong.”

“We needed to be together. We needed a gigantic church. We needed a gathering, and a gathering that brings people together, and sports are the biggest venues to do that.” – Doc Rivers, former Celtics head coach, on how sports can bring a region together

“I guess your emotions are really all over the place. Even as a coach, you’re trying to stay composed, and you’re trying to stay strong. But, at the same time, deep down inside, you just feel like crying.” — Claude Julien, Bruins coach, describing the moments before the first Boston sporting event to take place after the bombing

UMass guard Derrick Gordon sits down with Kate Fagan to announce that he is gay, becoming the first openly gay athlete in Division I men’s basketball.

“It was a rough process, actually, leading up to this. Those guys (Gordon’s network of mentors) just helped me get to where I am right now. If it wasn’t for them, I’d be stuck. For this to be happening right now, me coming out, it’s an indescribable feeling, honestly. I couldn’t be any happier. I feel like I can fly.” – Derrick Gordon

You wouldn’t expect to see a Major Leaguer picking up an empty bottle or wrapper on the field, but Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso would not be above it. In 1995 his family left Cuba and settled in Miami where his father worked several jobs, including cleaning office buildings with Yonder helping until 2008 when he was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft. He gained his reputation for being a “clean” guy – a reputation Yonder says doesn’t bother him and that working hard with his dad helped make him who he is today.
