Coaches Behaving Badly
Outside the Lines (Sunday 9 a.m. ET, ESPN)
The images have been splashed across television, the internet, and social media – Jim Boeheim, John Calipari, Kevin Ollie and other college basketball coaches exploding at game officials. Coaches’ sideline tantrums are nothing new in college hoops, but the most recent outbursts have some wondering if these incidents are becoming more frequent and, worse, giving the sport a bad name. Greg Garber searches for answers.
“One play, one call, one missed shot is the difference between maybe playing in the postseason and not. The stakes are really high.” – Derek Kellogg, men’s head basketball coach, University of Massachusetts
“Let’s not sit here act like every official is competent. We’re talking about this thing like we’re talking about church. We’re not talking about a pastor, a priest, a rabbi. We’re talking about the damn official and we’re talking about a coach.” – John Thompson, Hall of Famer and former Georgetown coach

ESPN’s College GameDay and ABC’s Nightline will show the impact of in-game stress on high-profile coaches, focusing on Michigan State’s Tom Izzo. ESPN Sport Science and host John Brenkus collaborated with ABC for the respective features.
“When I first heard about the story we wanted to tell, and the fact that we had a great subject in coach Tom Izzo, it was clear to me that this was a perfect fit for ESPN Sport Science, said ESPN Coordinating producer Ursula Pfeiffer. “This is what Sport Science does every day: analyze situations in the sports world by collecting data and presenting the results in a comprehensive and entertaining way. Most importantly, the Sport Science Lab has the tools and the perfect team to do just that.” For details check ESPNFrontRow.com
