On the 10th anniversary of her death (March 2, 2004), former controversial Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott is remembered by native Ohioan and “Big Red Machine” fan and actor Luke Perry. Of Cincinnati’s controversial sports figures, none got as much attention as Schott, a widowed car dealership owner who, in 1984, became the first woman to buy a Major League Baseball franchise. She was an owner “of the people,” who allowed fans to visit her front-row seat during games, but this SC Featured piece also shows a darker side, as in 1992 when former employees revealed her alleged racist comments.
“It was kind of a known that she was saying, you know, various things off the top of her head, but, that kind of shocked me. It was kind of hurtful.” — Dave Parker, former Red, on discovering Marge Schott referred to him as a “million-dollar n*****.”
“I remember one time, we were playing a game, and Schottzie relieved herself right behind second base. Ground ball up the middle. I dive and stop the ball, and I got Schottzie poo all over my jersey.” — Barry Larkin, ESPN baseball analyst and former Red, on Marge allowing her St. Bernard dogs to roam Riverfront Stadium.
