ESPYS 20 - July 11, 2012Three Southeastern Conference (SEC) women’s college basketball games across ESPN2 and ESPNU on Sunday, Jan. 26, will honor former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt as part of the SEC’s “We Back Pat” initiative. No. 10 South Carolina will face Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. on ESPN2, Auburn will play Florida at 3 p.m. on ESPNU and No. 8 Tennessee will travel to Texas A&M at 4 p.m., also on ESPN2.

Through the game telecasts, ESPN will honor Summitt’s leadership on-and-off the court through storytelling and in-game graphics. espnW.com will have additional features relating to the legendary Tennessee coach.

The SEC’s “We Back Pat” is a week-long initiative focusing on bringing awareness and recognition to The Pat Summitt Foundation. The initiative includes 19 conference games January 19-26 and will promote the cause through in-arena PSAs, “We Back Pat” shooting shirts and several coaches and teams wearing the color purple.

Summitt and her son Tyler launched The Pat Summitt Foundation on November 27, 2011, after her diagnosis of early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type at the age of 59.

Summitt was the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team from 1974 to 2012 and is now “head coach emeritus.” At the helm for 38 seasons, she is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history for men’s and women’s teams and compiled an overall record of 1098-208. She won eight NCAA National Championships, earned 18 NCAA Final Four berths and captured 16 SEC regular-season and tournament titles.

A part of the Internal Communications team at ESPN, I began with the network in 2010 as part of the College Sports PR team. Always an avid sports fan and not an athlete – I grew up a huge fan of the Hartford Whalers, while also watching my brother compete at different levels. I became the manager of several high school sports teams and continued that hobby into college. While at Quinnipiac, I worked in the Sports Information Department, which led me to a summer internship at the New Haven Ravens, a AA baseball team, and an eventual job with the Athletic Communications Department at the University of Connecticut. After my five-year stint at Connecticut, I spent six years as Director of Communications at the BIG EAST Conference in Providence, R.I. before joining ESPN.
