ESPN senior writer Wright Thompson chronicles the birth of a Brazilian generation as love for the national team overlaps with political insurgency. Bob Ley hosts Friday’s OTL with guests Thompson and Steve McManaman, Liverpool soccer legend and former England National Team player.
“The opening match is six months away now, and there’s a weird energy in the streets of Brazil. It’s palpable, the fumes of a nation’s young people looking around for the first time and not liking what they see. Something is happening. A general sense of unhappiness hit the prism of June’s Confederations Cup and turned into a laser, focused on corruption, and on massive public spending for a sporting event despite crumbling infrastructure and public services. In the middle of the tournament, more than a million citizens took to the streets on a single day.” – Wright Thompson

The advantage of a daily sports-news show is its ability to report on the news of the day. A disadvantage is that viewers often don’t know what that selected news will be.
Monday, the Outside the Lines team enhanced its promotional efforts by producing a daily video clip previewing each afternoon’s show. This bonus content, overseen by producers Robbin Dunn and Paul Palmer, runs on SportsCenter and ESPN.com, with links also on OTL’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, prior to the 4:30 p.m. ET OTL on ESPN2.
“Just getting all the details ironed out before we could begin doing them was a small undertaking,” Dunn said. “We needed a place for Bob Ley to tape them, we needed a director, a production assistant to cut video, needed to get fonts built, needed to get it clipped off and distributed to the appropriate people. A lot of emails were flying around to get everything set up.”
Thom Griffin, who volunteered to be first PA and “help iron out the kinks,” according to Dunn, says, “Our goal with OTL’s daily digital content is to both increase our reach and presence on digital platforms, as well as enhance the experience for our viewers who engage in those media. We hope this content will deliver our fans a heightened knowledge of our daily subject matter before they ever get a chance to tune in.”
The new content not only impacts those directly working on it, but the entire OTL team: the traditional 9:30 a.m. ET show meeting was moved to 9 a.m. so it can be taped before noon.
“We are excited about the chance to let viewers know what we are working on,” Dunn said. “While it may be a topic SportsCenter is covering, we always look for another angle and can spend more time on the subject than most other shows can.”
