Football is a generational passion for the Sankey family. The University of Washington’s Bishop Sankey learned the game from his father Chris, who learned it from his father, Albert. Everyone has watched Bishop become the nation’s fourth-leading rusher except one person: Albert, who was blind the past five years. However, last Saturday, ESPN cameras were in the stands at Stanford where Chris and Albert, who had his vision restored through cornea transplant surgery in September, watched Bishop play. Tom Rinaldi reports.
“I wanted to see my grandson run that ball. I just wanted to be able to see him. It was like looking at myself down through the years.” – Albert Sankey

College GameDay (Saturday, 9 a.m. ESPN)
The NCAA estimates that more than 3,000 college football players suffer concussions each year. Some medical experts wonder whether the “up tempo” style of play on the college level could be part of the problem. And now, with two separate concussion lawsuits against the NCAA making their way through the courts, a number of schools – and the Association itself – are intensifying efforts to address the issue. John Barr reports.

Inspired by Lingerie Football, Mexican entrepreneur Oswaldo Ochoa is about to launch the Ibero-American Bikini Football League. The league will kick off with 20 teams, divided into two divisions and spread over four Latin American countries: Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Panama. A seemingly ambitious project that has been sneered upon by some, including the Mexican Football Federation that states this is entertainment and not a sport. Nonetheless, Ochoa promises to develop a sports league as competitive as FIFA.
Outside the Lines host Bob Ley received the “Pop” Curry Award from Jersey City, N.J.-based Team Walker at its “Evening of Dreams” event last week. Team Walker is a program with more than 500 participants and year-round academic and athletic programs.
This annual award was created in 2006 and is presented to an individual who puts others before themselves and gives back to the community. Bob, a Bloomfield, N.J. native, is currently on the advisory board of Team Walker.
“What my friend Jerry Walker accomplishes, on a daily basis, providing academic and social support for the kids of Jersey City, is remarkable,” said Ley, a Seton Hall graduate who joined ESPN in September 1979. “And to be honored with an award which bears his family’s name is deeply meaningful. They’re about to open their own building, after years of renting and leasing. And, as Jerry said – they built the classrooms first, not the gym.”
Walker, co-founder of the Team Walker program, said, “Bob has been very committed to the success of Team Walker. He is a great individual and friend who has helped the program tremendously throughout the years.”
