Sexual Assault in U.S. Military
E:60 (Tuesday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN)
Reports of a military hearing, in which three Navy football players faced charges of raping a female midshipman, illustrate a crisis of sexual assault in the military where, according to the Defense Department, 26,000 service members said they were targets of unwanted sexual contact last year. Jeremy Schaap’s report includes interviews with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and U.S. senators who are leading the call for reform.
“It is a problem that has been developing over a long period of time. We’re going to deal with it and we’re going to fix it… We need to get it done because it’s a disgrace to our country.” — Chuck Hagel, Secretary of Defense, describing the problem of sexual assault in America’s military
“It embarrasses and appalls me…. There’s obviously a problem at the Naval Academy. And it has to be repaired. And it grieves me when I see these things taking place.” — Senator John McCain, on issues at his alma mater, the Naval Academy

The Boston Red Sox have gone from worst to first in the American League East, following their follicles into post-season play. Chris Connelly describes the success of the bearded BoSox.
“We were in spring training and Johnny Gomes, he had a pretty long beard already, and he was just like, ‘Everyone, let’s just grow our beards out,’ and everyone caught on and we’ve been growing them all year. It’s part of me — I wake up in the morning, get in the shower, shampoo it, condition it, comb it. It’s just something that’s part of me now.” — Mike Napoli

OTL: Road From Ruin
“As a reporter, you couldn’t ask for more than to work for E:60,” Jeremy Schaap says of working for ESPN’s sports newsmagazine which airs its 100th episode Tuesday at 7 p.m. “We’ve been fortunate to be able to cover stories all over the planet, often the kind of stories that would otherwise remain untold.”
E:60, which debuted October 16, 2007, continues to innovate long-form storytelling, enterprise reporting and production technique.
Tuesday’s 100th episode will include a Schaap report on sexual abuse in the U.S. military, and Lisa Salters’ interview with outspoken Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs.
“For me personally, I think much of our best work has focused on bringing attention to human rights issues in the world of sport,” Schaap said. “We’ve reported on topics ranging from rape victims in South Africa, to athletes tortured in Bahrain, from children in Bhopal who can’t find playing fields uncontaminated by deadly chemicals, to uninsured high school athletes in the US who’ve suffered catastrophic injuries.”
In its 100 episodes, E:60 has reported from Kenya, Sudan, India, Dominican Republic, Morocco, Mexico, Senegal, Philippines, Netherlands, Haiti, Costa Rica, South Africa, Ukraine, Serbia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Panama, Liberia and the Middle East, in addition to the United States and Canada.
