Season Opens with Memorial Day Doubleheader; Plus WNBA All-Star Game on ABC

ESPN2 and ABC will combine to present 14 regular-season WNBA games, plus the return of the WNBA All-Star Game from Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. The 2013 schedule opens with a brand-new ESPN2 Memorial Day doubleheader featuring the WNBA Draft’s top four picks on Monday, May 27 when the Washington Mystics meet the Tulsa Shock at 3 p.m. ET, followed by Chicago Sky at the Phoenix Mercury at 5 p.m. The unveiling of the games coincides with the first-ever prime-time telecast of the WNBA Draft Presented by State Farm to be held at ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., headquarters on Monday, April 15, beginning at 8 p.m.

ESPN will continue to enhance its production and commitment to the sport through access to WNBA teams, players and coaches, including in-depth interviews and in-game elements such as microphones on players, coaches and referees.

espnW.com will take an in-depth look at the transition from college to the WNBA of ESPN’s season-long campaign focusing on the “3 to See” of Elena Delle Donne (Delaware), Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame) and Brittney Griner (Baylor). espnW.com will also further the network’s dedication with exclusive on-line content. The all-encompassing site will engage fans with storytelling and distinctive elements, continuing the momentum as the home of women’s sports.

ESPN2 will showcase the majority of the 2013 WNBA postseason. The WNBA Finals begin on Sunday, Oct. 6 for a best-of-five series.

The WNBA and ESPN have been affiliated for 17 years, dating back to the league’s inaugural season in 1997, and recently extended the relationship six years through the 2022 season.

A part of the Internal Communications team at ESPN, I began with the network in 2010 as part of the College Sports PR team. Always an avid sports fan and not an athlete – I grew up a huge fan of the Hartford Whalers, while also watching my brother compete at different levels. I became the manager of several high school sports teams and continued that hobby into college. While at Quinnipiac, I worked in the Sports Information Department, which led me to a summer internship at the New Haven Ravens, a AA baseball team, and an eventual job with the Athletic Communications Department at the University of Connecticut. After my five-year stint at Connecticut, I spent six years as Director of Communications at the BIG EAST Conference in Providence, R.I. before joining ESPN.
