Sunderland vs. Chelsea

As the Premier League season nears its half-way point, Chelsea and Sunderland is each fighting for every point to solidify their standings in the table.  Chelsea sits in third – the final spot for a Champions League bid next year – and is neck-and-neck with fourth-place Tottenham. After posting a loss and two draws in its last three Premier League matches, the Blues will look to make a statement against Sunderland.

The Black Cats are battling relegation, with a tenuous hold over the final place to qualify for Premier League status.  A win over Chelsea could be the spark that manager Martin O’Neill has been looking for.

Match Day 6 features a Group A match between English side Liverpool and Italian club Udinese, which Liverpool must win to have a more comfortable lead over Young Boys.  The two teams each has seven points in group play, however Liverpool has the advantage in goal differential with one goal to Young Boys’ -1.

In the second match of the day, Inter looks to shake off a disappointing 3-0 loss against Group H leader Rubin Kazan and make up some ground with a win over Azerbaijani club Neftchi.

Two of the top three teams in the Dutch First Division face off as first-place Twente (34 points, 20 goal differential) looks to put more distance between it and second-ranked Vitesse (34 points, 19 goal differential).  Though now in third, PSV (33 points, 34 goal differential) is poised to overtake Twente on points with a win.

Recently hired head coach Mike D’Antoni and Kobe Bryant lead the Lakers against one of the top teams in the Western Conference.  Oklahoma City, with a 9-2 record at home (as of Dec. 5), will be a tough road opponent for Los Angeles, but All-Star point guard Steve Nash could return for the Lakers and provide a much-needed push. The Thunder, meanwhile, remain steady behind the backcourt tandem of Kevin Durant (25.9 ppg) and Russell Westbrook (8.6 apg).

In an AFC battle between first-place teams, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots host Matt Schaub and the Houston Texans on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.  With a victory, the Patriots would capture a 10-win season for the tenth consecutive year.  They have a 10-1 record in the last 11 games on MNF.  Meanwhile, the Texans – in a quest to clinch the AFC South – strive to remain undefeated on the road.

North Hollywood California’s Raymundo Beltran, a sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, is trained by International Boxing Hall of Fame 2012 inductee Freddie Roach and 1992 U.S. Olympian Pepe Reilly. Beltran won his last fight in July with a 10-round majority decision win over Hank Lundy on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. South Korea’s Ji-Hoon Kim has won his last three fights, including a 10-round decision over previously undefeated Alisher Rahimov.
