This past summer, Memphis Grizzlies guard Greivis Vasquez, a native of Caracas, was invited by the American government to participate in clinics in Venezuela organized by the NBA in conjunction with the U.S. Government. The “Basketball and Friendship” tour was arranged to motivate youth to practice sports, and to promote cooperation between the U.S. and Venezuela, countries with a complex international relationship. It included games in Petare, considered one of the most dangerous areas in Caracas, and at the Naciones Unidas Stadium for an event for children who have Down Syndrome. Vasquez, Memphis’ 2010 first-round pick out of Maryland, was welcomed in his home town as a returning hero.

Remember the Children

Rick Reilly puts the Penn State situation into larger context. He writes:

This is not about Joe Paterno.

If these boys really were molested, groped and raped by a middle-aged ex-Penn State football coach, then whatever misjudgment Paterno made will be a single lit match compared to the bonfire these boys will walk in for years to come.

Many of them won’t be able to trust. Won’t be able to love. Won’t be able to feel — nor trust or love themselves.

Don’t feel sorry for Paterno. He’s had his life. Feel sorry for these boys, because they may never get one.
