On May 22nd, a devastating tornado struck the town of Joplin, Mo., destroying more than one-third of the town and killing 160 people. In the aftermath, Joplin found hope in one of the few places left standing: a football stadium. Sunday on Outside the Lines, the players and students of Joplin High share their stories of living through destruction and finding the strength to help a town heal.
Liz Merrill contributes an ESPN.com companion piece on Joplin.
“Some of these people, they’re going to come to our first game because they want to see how we represent them. That’s what’s driving me mostly. I feel like that’s what I need to do for all these people whose lives got dramatically altered – just make them proud to be from Joplin.” — Adam St. Peter, junior LB/RB
“Just being together is the thing that made us feel at home, and feel as a team. I think that’s one thing that got us through it.” — Austin Barnett, junior LB
Outside the Lines won four awards Monday, Oct. 10, at the prestigious Radio Television Digital News Association’s Edward R. Murrow dinner in New York City.

For the first time in the history of the Pan-American Games, women will be able to compete for medals. One of the three women representing the U.S. will be a Latina: Christina Cruz. In her six years of boxing, Christina has won five national tournaments, including a USA National Championship and the National Golden Gloves. Her success in the amateur circuit could have translated into a professional career that, as low paying as women’s pro-boxing is, would still provide her with an income. Instead, with the financial support of her family and loved ones, she has chosen to go for gold.
ESPN Deportes will provide daily Pan American Games coverage from Guadalajara, Mexico Friday, Oct.14 – Sunday, Oct. 30. Coverage also will be featured on ESPN Deportes, ESPN3, ESPN Deportes Radio, ESPNdeportes.com and ESPN Deportes La Revista. In addition, ESPN2 will provide coverage in English.
Giants’ Victor Cruz Turns Loss into Big Gain

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz had no problem avoiding trouble while growing up in Paterson, N.J., but struggled to maintain his grades to play football, an issue that continued at the University of Massachusetts where he would lose his scholarship. But, the death of his father, Michael Walker, by an apparent suicide, changed Cruz’s life. He used the loss to get focused, earning back his UMass scholarship, signing with the Giants as an undrafted free agent last season, and emerging as a target in the Giants’ offense. Josina Anderson files this report as ESPN recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month
“It was definitely the driving force that put my foot down to that pedal — it was either now or never. You’re either going to make the best of this opportunity or you’re going to waste it. So, I told myself I’m going to get my grades right, I’m going to study, I’m going to study hard.” – Victor Cruz, on re-focusing after the death of his father
