Wednesday Night Baseball: Special Hispanic Heritage Month Telecast
ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a special telecast featuring the Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics on September 21, at 10 p.m. ET. Regular Wednesday Night Baseball commentators – analyst Nomar Garciaparra and reporter Pedro Gomez – will be joined by ESPN Deportes’ Alvaro Martin (play-by-play) and Candy Maldonado (analyst), as well as reporter Jessica Mendoza (an espnW.com contributor).
The telecast will incorporate several unique elements including:
- the use of Spanish-language commentary at select times during the ESPN telecast (e.g., play-by-play of a home run or great defensive play in Spanish);
- Spanish-language graphics when displaying a player’s statistics this season (e.g., batting average, home runs, RBI, etc.);
- graphics in Spanish, with English translation, when addressing a variety of topics throughout the telecast.
Additionally, the telecast will include discussion on the following:
- the first Hispanic players in MLB;
- notable Hispanic MLB and Negro League players in the Hall of Fame;
- the first Hispanic player to throw a no-hitter; reach 3,000 hits; toss a perfect game;
- the first Hispanic general manager; owner; manager to win a World Series, etc.
The Rangers/Athletics game will also be available via ESPN3 and ESPN Mobile TV.
