Making a Case for Maris

Outside the Lines
(Sunday, 10 a.m., ET, ESPN)

The debate continues 50 years after Roger Maris’ 61 home run season over whether that feat should stand as the true record. While Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds all surpassed Maris’ mark, they did it during the so-called “steroid era.” OTL’s Bob Ley examines the controversy, and whether Maris had a career worthy of the Hall of Fame.

“With the passage of time, and going through the steroid era, his (Maris) stature has really grown. He still holds the legitimate single-season home run record; it’s one of the great achievements in baseball history.”— Bob Costas

“Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the stats, and really the overall Hall of Fame credentials, to be a Hall of Famer. At least in my opinion.” Bill Madden, sports columnist for New York Daily News who was awarded the J.G. Taylor Spink Award at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown

Just one day after Russell Wilson, the former North Carolina State and current Wisconsin quarterback, was drafted in the fourth round by the Colorado Rockies last summer, his father died following a long illness. Harrison Wilson was the last player cut from the San Diego Chargers before the 1980 NFL season, and he shared a dream with his son of playing in the NFL. After Russell graduated from N.C. State, where he started for three years and led the ACC in passing yards per game last season, he transferred to Wisconsin as a graduate student and became the team’s starting quarterback with the hope of keeping his NFL dream alive. Tom Rinaldi reports.

“I think my Dad’s dream and my dream correlate very, very well. The seed he instilled in me is to always try and be the best, and that translates to the rest of my life as well.” — Russell Wilson

“He used to wake us up at six in the morning before school. I’d be throwing my dad and my brother routes, 15-yard routes, and 12-yard out-routes, and deep posts. That work ethic was instilled in me in an early age.” Wilson, on how his father practiced with him

Veteran Eagle Returns to Philadelphia
NFL Countdown
(Sunday, 10 a.m., ESPN)

David Akers, the longest-tenured Eagle player in franchise history (188 games in 12 seasons), returns to Philadelphia Sunday with the San Francisco 49ers. During his last game in Philadelphia, he missed two field goals in the Eagles 21-16 Wild Card playoff loss to the Packers. “We can all count, and those points would have helped,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said after the game. What many people didn’t know — Akers’ world had been turned upside down 48 hours before the game when he learned his six-year-old daughter, Halley, had a cancerous tumor. Akers talks to ESPN analyst Tim Hasselbeck about the events leading up to the Packers game and his return to Philadelphia this week in a 49ers uniform.
