Tershy Takes First Gold in Skateboard Park

X Games Rookie Makes Golden First Impression

 

Raven Tershy blew the roof off his first X Games appearance Thursday as he mastered the park course to take home an X Games gold medal. The Santa Cruz, Calif. native took over the lead in his second-to-last run at the course with the help of an extended ollie frontside nose grind.

“I wasn’t looking at the scores, I just tried to lay down my strongest run,” Tershy said. “I’m stoked! I wasn’t expecting this. I had no idea, but I had a great time!”

Last year’s returning X Games gold medalist Pedro Barros missed his chance at a repeat win by a very slim one point, claiming the silver with a series of runs that showed off his mastery of the 540.

“I put together a couple of good tricks and I’m super stoked to see my friends doing well,” Barros said.

Ben Hatchell finished out the day with the bronze medal.

Skateboard Park finals consist of a 15-minute jam session where riders have 40 seconds each run to show the judges a variety of difficult and innovative moves. The Skateboard Park course is made up of two bowls, two banked walls, one vert wall and a doorway feature.

X Games 17

In its ninth year in Los Angeles, X Games 17 will feature more than 200 athletes at competition venues and event spaces including STAPLES Center and Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE. The 17^th annual action sports competition to be held in Los Angeles July 28 – 31 and will debut the new discipline of Enduro X, as well as the first-ever rally street circuit running through the downtown area. ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC will combine to telecast 25 hours of live X Games 17 competition. In addition to the 25  original hours in high definition, the Worldwide Leader in Action Sports will also televise 18 hours of X Games action on ESPN 3D. More than 25 hours will also be distributed on ESPN3.com.
