It still stands as one of this century’s most spectacular stories of survival — 33 Chilean miners trapped underground and celebrated with the entire world when they came to the surface 69 days later. One miner was Franklin Lobos, a former soccer player who brought a title to his city of Copiapo long ago. Among his rescuers was a player who had played against him.

“He was the same person I remember. It was so beautiful — a person who, despite it all, had not been damaged by anything.” — Diego Solis, Lobos’ former teammate on seeing his friend after spending 69 days underground.

“Carolina gave me the ball and I kicked it around a bit. The most beautiful memory I have of coming out…is seeing Carolina well after all the suffering we endured.” — Franklin Lobos, on finding his daughter Carolina waiting for him on the surface after he spent 69 days in the mine

How NASCAR teams manage their fuel is as important as how their driver steers his car. John Brenkus and the ESPN Sport Science team provide an inside look at fuel strategy used by NASCAR teams.

Depending on the track, Sprint Cup drivers get between 2-4 miles per gallon, emptying their fuel cells in about 80 miles. Crew chiefs consider several factors when deciding to refuel: track design; weather/track temperature; cautions; and racing technique.

“Fuel strategy is pretty simple – either refuel one time less than everyone else, or at the perfect time to gain a few extra inches on the track. Every inch counts: the average margin of victory for the 19 Sprint Cup races this season (excluding the summer Daytona, which finished under caution) is only 1.5 seconds.” – John Brenkus, ESPN Sport Science host

OTL Revisits Fred McNeil and Rodeo Vests
Outside the Lines (Sunday, 9 a.m., ESPNEWS)

Sunday’s OTL will feature a pair of encore presentations:

Fred McNeil — The former Vikings linebacker, participating in a potentially groundbreaking new study on CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), has filed a workers’ comp case against his old team, a case believed to be among the first based primarily on dementia.

Rodeo Vests — Safety vests that are supposed to protect bull riders are not always doing their jobs, and riders, including children, are dying.
