Sled dog rides are a popular tourist attraction in parts of Canada, and the dogs themselves hold a deep and abiding place in the hearts of Canadians. So when news broke earlier this year that as many as 100 of these dogs were shot to death or had their throats slit as a cost-cutting measure by a tour company north of Vancouver, people were outraged. The incident is now under criminal investigation. In a worker’s compensation report, the manager of the tour company who carried out the killings, Bob Fawcett, describes the gruesome details of how he executed each of the dogs, but he has never spoken publicly about it. Sunday, in an OTL exclusive, a person Fawcett has confided in explains new details of how and why this happened. Mark Fainaru-Wada tells the gripping story of a man who says circumstances forced him to “execute and watch most of my best friends die.”

“You only think about this stuff in a war movie. It just doesn’t seem to be something you’d associate with a tourist industry or, to be honest, anything that would go on in a civilized society.” — Marcie Moriarty, overseeing a criminal probe of the incident led by The British Columbia SPCA

Well, you don’t see me taking a gun and shooting my employees, do you? ‘Oh, sorry, you know, I have no work for you so here (makes gun motion with her hand), you’re costing me money and now I’m going to kill you.’” — Connie Arsenault, owner of Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours in Canmore, Alberta

“To put down even a single animal is heart-wrenching, and he didn’t want to subject anyone – he didn’t want anybody else to have to go through it.” – “Mary,” whom Bob Fawcett confided in, on Fawcett conducting the cull (thinning of the herd by selectively killing dogs) by himself

ESPN Sport Science: X Games Require Physics & Physical Prowess
SportsCenter and various programming, including ESPN Deportes (this weekend)

The latest installments of ESPN Sports Science show that elite skateboarders and BMX riders have their tricks down to a science, and the keys are rooted in simple physics: acceleration (the rate that velocity changes over time); momentum (the product of mass and velocity) and force (mass X acceleration).

“No disrespect to Tony Hawk, Shaun White and Travis Pastrana, but the biggest star of the X Games will always be Sir Isaac Newton.” – John Brenkus, ESPN Sport Science host
