Never Forgotten: Wes Leonard
Outside the Lines (Sunday, 9 a.m. ET, ESPN)

Sixteen-year old Wesley James Leonard made a game-winning layup in overtime on March 3 to clinch an undefeated regular season for the Fennville ( Mich.) High School boys basketball team. Minutes later, Leonard collapsed and died from sudden cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart in a tragic moment that instantly became national and international news. For almost two weeks, ESPN’s SportsCenter covered the team’s decision to play and improbable run through the state playoffs in the wake of Leonard’s death. Now, Outside the Lines presents an exclusive documentary told by those who were there. From practice to the locker room, from the hallways to the bleachers; 12 days of mourning that found basketball as a way to heal, celebrate, and to never forget the life of Wes Leonard

“Right now, there’s still some sad memories that come to your forefront when you enter that gym. It will be a place, every day, I have to open up in the morning, and I know the first thing I’ll think about is Wes. If I have to lock it up at night, it will be the last thing I think about.” – Ryan Klinger, Fennville High basketball coach

“Wes was, I would say, the Michael Jordan of Fennville High School. Kids wanted to be like Wes.” — DeMarcus McGee. Wes Leonard’s teammate

“I honestly, with all my heart, I think it was six against five tonight.” — Rocky Johnson, Bangor coach, after losing 79-50 to Fennville in the District Semifinals

Soccer Celebrations

It started as a joke between friends and has blossomed into a YouTube sensation. In the summer of 2010, players on Iceland’s Stjarnan Football Club performed an elaborate post-goal celebration that included one teammate acting as fisherman and another acting as fish. The crowd loved it and a tradition was born. Since then, the team has saluted Sylvester Stallone, ballroom dancing, and created a human bicycle. Greg Garber presents the group of friends who put Icelandic soccer on the map.
