Danger on the Ice
Outside the Lines (Sunday, 9 a.m. ET, ESPN)
Sidney Crosby, A face of the NHL, suffered his second concussion of the season in January, and has not played a game since. His injury raised concerns about safety in all levels of hockey, from the NHL to youth leagues. Youth hockey owns the highest concussion rate for a team sport, even higher than football. Most youth hockey leagues in the U.S. allow full body checking for players starting at age 11, and some within the sport fear this is changing the focus of the game. Reporter Tom Farrey investigates the dangers in youth hockey and what measures are being taken to keep players safe.
“The focus is on physicality, on ignoring the puck and trying to knock somebody. Kind of like football on ice.” — Kevin McLaughlin, Director of Development, USA Hockey, describing today’s Peewee hockey
“I do not think that legal body checking is the root of all evil. However, when legal body checking is allowed, sometimes players do not have the skills to give a check or to receive a check, and I think there is a higher risk of more dangerous unanticipated hits.” – Dr. Michael Stuart, Co-Director, Sports Medicine Center at the Mayo Clinic and U.S. Olympic Hockey team physician

Six people who play with San Francisco closer Brian Wilson, the so-called “Craziest Man in Baseball,” were asked how he is as a teammate, and all of them waxed on — and on — about his focus, intelligence and ability to keep things light. Early in 2010 he said the Giants would win the World Series, which he helped them do with a league-best 48 saves and timely escapes throughout the post-season. Elizabeth Merrill visited Wilson’s hometown of Londonderry, N.H. to learn about one of baseball’s star relievers.
“I’m in my 20s, and I’m playing baseball. Every time I take the mound is one of the greatest things ever. I get to be part of my team and do my job.” – Brian Wilson
