The Rookie Takes It

Winter X Games Rookie Schlopy Takes Skiing Big Air

Your typical Winter X Games rookie might let the nerves of performing in front of a national TV audience and a record crowd 41,800 get to them.

On Saturday night, Alex Schlopy proved he wasn’t your average rookie, taking the Skiing Big Air gold medal with a top score of 92.

“I can’t believe this,” said Schlopy as he grinned ear-to-ear. “I came in thinking I was just going to go as big as possible. I just wanted to put on a great show at the X Games. That’s what it’s all about.”

With the win, Schlopy carried on the family tradition of successful skiing. His mom, Holly Flanders, is a two-time Olympian and three-time World Cup downhill winner.

Schlopy knocked off last year’s gold medalist Bobby Brown, whose score of 89 was good enough for the silver medal.

“I was feeling great during Big Air and I am just stoked I am on the podium with these two guys,” said Brown.  “It was a great show and I am pumped.”

Sammy Carlson, who earlier today captured the gold in Skiing Slopestyle, grabbed the bronze medal with a score of 87.

The Skiing Big Air competition features top skiers launching themselves off of a single feature, across the 85-foot step-up gap in a jam session format.  Each run is judged on aggressive execution of maneuvers, degree of difficulty, variety of maneuvers, originality and style.
