Well Worth the Wait
Carlson Wins His First Gold in Men’s Skiing Slopestyle
The sun going down over Buttermilk Mountain provided a stunning backdrop to Saturday afternoon’s Men’s Skiing Slopestyle final. But it also provided difficult skiing conditions as flat light and shadows played menace to the competitors.
But Sammy Carlson was not to be denied, as he grabbed his first career gold at Winter X Games 15.
“This feels amazing,” said an overwhelmed Carlson, who has won silver in this event twice. “To win this event is my dream, my one dream in life and I did it. My whole family is here, it’s just amazing.”
Carlson’s winning run was his first run, a trip down the Slopestyle course that included a rail section 270 joystick grab, kangaroo flip, double rodeo 900, double flat 900 and a double cork 1080.
“I can’t believe it. I was so stoked my first run held up,” said Carlson who scored a 93.33 on his winning run. “The level of competition is getting so high.”
Russ Henshaw, who qualified first for the finals, nabbed the silver with a top score of 90.66 which he also achieved in his first run.
Norway’s Andreas Hatveit, who was the silver medalist last year, grabbed the bronze with a top score of 90.00.
Last year’s winner Bobby Brown finished fourth.
Winter X Games 15 marks the 10th year of Skiing Slopestyle. Using the same course as snowboarders, skiers will showcase their freestyle skills on a variety of obstacles including rails, kickers, jumps and gaps. Judging is focused on creativity, trick completion and style.
