Soccer Star Xavi Hernández receives the 2010 ESPN Deportes Player of the Year Award

Spanish soccer star, Xavi Hernández, was named 2010 ESPN Deportes Player of the Year for his outstanding performance in the world of sports. The 2010 FIFA World Cup Champion and FC Barcelona’s midfielder star was presented with this award by ESPN Deportes’ soccer expert Fernando Palomo on Tuesday, Jan. 11 in Spain. The network’s Fuera de Juego shared with sports fans the moment when Xavi received the award in last night’s show.

The ESPN Deportes Player of the Year Award was started in 2009 by the network to recognize outstanding players in all sports. ESPN Deportes’ renowned team of soccer experts along with the production team selected Xavi as the 2010 recipient of the award based on his performance and excellence in the field. Xavi helped take his teams, Spain’s national team and FC Barcelona, to win top tournaments in the world, including last year’s 2010 FIFA World Cup where Spain became the world’s champion for the first time in the history of the tournament.

“Thank you very much. This is a real honor for me. I feel very flattered by everyone with this global recognition. I feel very proud and grateful, thank you very much,” Xavi said about receiving the Award.

Considered one of the best soccer players, not only in Europe but also in the world, Xavi has achieved many wins and accomplishments: In 2008, Xavi was one of the key players of Spain’s national team as they won the European Championship, a title which had not been won in 44 years, and he was recognized as the player of the tournament. With Barcelona, he has won 14 club trophies — six titles were won in 2009: League, Copa del Rey, Champions League, World Club Cup, Spanish Super Cup and European Super Cup. Xavi has also been recognized with two Champions League winners’ medals awarded during the 2005-06 and 2008-09 seasons; he was also named ‘Man of the Match’ in 2008-09.  Recently, Xavi was among the three finalists for the award of the FIFA Golden Ball and also played his 550th match with Barcelona during the 1-1 tie match against Athletic Bilbao that advanced Barcelona to the quarterfinals of Spain’s 2011 Copa del Rey.
