Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence loved basketball — and each other, getting engaged in February. A week later they were found shot to death, victims, police believe, of a former Los Angeles police officer’s killing spree. Friends and family, struggling to make sense of the tragedy, give reporter Steve Delsohn a glimpse into the lives of two people whose bond began with the love of a sport. Family video helps OTL tell this emotional story.

“I’m just trying to get by day by day. Every breeze that blows, every bird that goes by, I’m looking for it to be him. I’m waiting on him to turn the corner and say, ‘Dad I’m still here.’” – Kevin Lawrenceon missing his son

“She was definitely one of those players you didn’t want to play against. She was in your face, scrappy, diving after balls. Basketball was her life. She probably dreamed about basketball too.” – Britt Sumidawho found out after the tragedy that Monica was planning to ask her to be her maid-of-honor

Wright Thompson writes:

“I’ve given up hope of ever fully understanding the fractured things I saw while chasing the Serie A soccer circus around Italy. Let me be honest. I got sent to write about racism, which I found in staggering amounts. But Italy isn’t like America, and racism there is tied into a thousand years of feuds, and hatred of anyone different, even if they’re from only a few miles away, and fascism, and the recent wave of immigration. That’s all in here, but it’s unfair to hide my predicament, which became clear after only a day or two. I’d fallen into a parallel universe of contradictions.”

Unknown-4Coleen Dominguez interviews Lil Wayne

When LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined the Heat in 2010, a new celebrity row emerged in Miami. While the famous stars attending games in New York and Los Angeles derive from film and television, Miami’s VIPs come from the city’s burgeoning music scene and the world of hip-hop.

“A lot of musicians go to Miami to record, because to record you want to be relaxed. Miami is a great musical environment. While you’re down there, why not go see a great show with the Miami Heat?” — Lil Wayne

Paloma Torres always dreamed of coaching synchronized swimming, and when she got the chance to combine her passion for the sport with her job as a physiologist, “Sirenas Especiales” (Special Mermaids) were born.
