Mark Jackson on how difficult it is to defend Dirk Nowitzki one-on-one:

“ The way Dirk Nowitzki is playing on the offensive end, there is nobody that can defend him one-on-one. You put a smaller guy on him, he can shoot over him. You put a bigger guy on him, he can put it on the floor and post up. In the past he had a weakness, he couldn’t post up. He was a soft player looking for jump shots. He’s a complete basketball player today on the offensivee end.”

Mike Breen on Dwyane Wade’s greatness in the 2006 NBA Finals:

“Wade had his brightest moment in The Finals in 2006. Wade almost single-handedly brought them back from the 0-2 deficit. Miami Heat winning their first NBA championship that year.”

Jeff Van Gundy on Miami Heat defense:

“Absolutely suffocating. I just don’t see how any team right now in the NBA in a series could consistently get quality half court looks against this team. You have to score in transition, you have to try and get to the free throw line.”

Mark Jackson on Erik Spoelstra coaching the Miami Heat:

“I don’t think enough credit was given to Erik Spoelstra for the way he handled himself. He was calm, extremely confident and patient with this group. He did a great job of coaching them through this tough time.”

Jeff Van Gundy:

“Everybody is recognizing him now. I think he should have been recognized his first two years. He got 43 and 47 wins out of Dwyane Wade, a lot of flawed players and a lot of guys on one-year contracts. He was able to keep them in the playoffs, which I believe helped Wade still want to be here and LeBron James and Chris Bosh want to come here and think they can win a championship.”

Mark Jackson on the Dallas zone defense:

“I am totally convinced if the Dallas Mavericks are to win a championship, the zone will be the key. You have to find a way to make LeBron James and Dwyane Wade jump shooters. They have proven they can dominate the paint area. Make them do their damage on the perimeter.”

Jeff Van Gundy:

“I give Rick Carlisle a lot of credit for having the foresight of having a zone in all season that they’ve worked on and played extensively so that at this time, it may be their best defensive weapon when they get their best offensive weapons on the floor.”

Mike Breen on Miami’s success, criticism:

“You hear often, ‘I want anyone to win but the Heat.’ The funny thing is, you take away The Decision, you take away the introductory press conference, this is an unselfish team, a hard working team. They play defense. They do all the things we like to applaud, yet a lot of people still look at them as villains.”
